Hadik Palace in Tornanádaska

Hadik Palace in Tornanádaska

The neo-Baroque u-shaped edifice dates from medieval times. In the garden just in front of the main entrance, one finds a 15th century Venetian well. A more than 300 year old acacia tree graces the inner courtyard. At the time of its planting in the 1600s, acacias (Mimosoideae) were still a curiosity and rarity, hence its central placement. The palace now functions as a student dormitory.

The castle park is unique in the karst area for its aboretum of almost 200 tree species. Exceptional specimens include the Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), thuja (Thuja occidentalis), huge nordmann fir (Abies nordmanniana), Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), and the pride of the collection, a giant redwood http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sequoiadendron_giganteum (Sequoiadendron gigantea) with a 30-40 cm diameter trunk.

The park can be visited the whole year round, access near the castle entrance.
Tours of the castle require advanced booking, and for groups only.
