JANUARY

Special Winter Tour in the Aggtelek Karst I: Environmental Education Programme (for schools)
The Aggtelek Karst shows different faces in different seasons. When snow blankets the hillsides, or if fog sits in the valleys, the mountainous environment is palpable. The tour includes the heights of Szád Castle. From the lofty castle ruins you get a real sense of the topography and landscape. If ice and snow happen to prevent the tour from taking this route, your guide will bring you on an alternative path to the hucul horse pasture, giving you a taste tracking in the wintery karst forests.
Date and Time: Tuesday, January 28, 2014. 09:30 am
Location: Szögliget, Salamander House
Tickets: 250 huf/person
More Info: Manor House Environmental Education Centre - tel: 48/350-056, www.kuriaoktatokozpont.hu

The Aggtelek National Park (and Slovak Karst) World Heritage Site’s karst surface is also marked by the workings of underground springs. Four of these streams (Kecső, Jósva, Small and Big Tohonya) converge in the scenic village of Jósvafő. Take a tour around the historic village, the valley it rests in, and the streams and springs that have defined this unique karst landscape.

Meeting Point: Jósvafő, Manor House Environmental Education Centre

“Seed Power” Exhibition Opening
MagtArt Arts Granary (Magtár), Bódvaszilas
Time: 14:00
A significant part of mankind remains unaware of how our wastefulness, greed and indiscriminate use of our planet's resources has led to the irreversible processes transforming natural areas into sites desecrated by pollution and the largest mass extinction of wildlife in history. The deteriorating condition of the earth's natural areas also has resulted in loud calls by many professionals for the ex situ preservation of important plant species.

An important step taken by Hungarian authorities under the auspices of the Life+ Project was the establishment of the Hungarian Pannon Seed Bank. Seeds from over 800 species of vascular plants will be collected and preserved by the Plant Diversity Centre, Ecological Research Centre and Ecological and Botanical Institute. For security purposes, a duplicate of the entire seed collection are stored by Aggtelek National Park deep within the former ore and mineral mine under Esztamos Hill. LIFE+ Biodiversity projects contribute to the implementation of “Halting the loss of biodiversity by 2010 – and beyond.” The establishment of the Pannon Seed Bank aims for the long-term ex situ conservation of Hungarian vascular wild plants.

The aim of the exhibition is to demonstrate the inner power of seeds – the role and significance of plants in our lives. Additional programmes such as lectures, biology classes, and arts and crafts events may be organised.
Tickets: Free
Open Hours: daily 8:00 to 16:00
