The Saint Francis Shrine, beside the road between the villages of Aggtelek and Jósvafő is the only such site in Hungary located in a nature protection area. The shrine was blessed by the Hungarian Catholic Church of Eger.
World Animal Day has been celebrated since October 4, 1931, saint day of St. Francis of Assisi. A Greek Catholic liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at 11:30 in his honour by parish priest István Kelemen together with students from the Saint Matthew Greek Catholic High School in Edelény. There will also be a speech by Győző Buzetzky, the first Director of Aggtelek National Park.
