The effects of light pollution are not often discussed, but it is at least as large a problem as other forms of pollution. 2015 is the International Year of Light, and to celebrate this occasion Aggtelek National Park has organised night constellation tours and firefly tours.
Hungary currently has two Dark Sky Parks, the Zselic and Hortobágy National Park. The Kaptárkő Nature and Cultural Association is striving to enable the Bükk National Park to join the ranks of International Dark Sky Parks. This title is only awarded to areas where darkness reigns at night where the light pollution of even distant cities do not block out the stars. See the demo video about their project here. Unfortunately, Aggtelek National Park has not yet achieved this certification, but we are in the process. In the meantime, continue to follow announcements on our webpage or in the newsletter about our evening programmes.
