When Jean-François L'Huillier, a colonel from Elszáz-Lotharingia, France began to build the palace three centuries ago, he could not have suspected that his ambitious venture would still be having a profound impact on the life of the town 300 years later. Following intensive renovation in 2014, the palace as re-opened to the general public as the Edelény Castle Island. The region’s most important baroque palace is open every day except Mondays.
The guided tour includes a 3D film starring opera singer Andrea Rost. The short historical period drama follows the history of local artist Ferenc Lieb, and how his frescoes came to adorn the palace walls. In the film, the young and talented painter, Ferenc Lieb serves the wealthy family of the residency by painting six marvellous frescos in the castle. These paintings come to life: memories and imaginary stories present us the fresco’s characters as we take a journey with them back in time, to the castle’s everyday life.
